expanding her networking groups, and on top of all this manage a family of three

Pens and notepaper can go in the top drawer along with the stapler and other essentials. Use the space as a workspace instead of a storage area.
Also, to maximize your desk space and minimize distractions, keep the inbox off of your desk. The inbox is meant for incoming items,and they should come in by the door. So place your inbox closer to the door; that way as you walk by you can toss something in the box.
